The Asberry Cemetery

by Angela L MSSPI

On nice days, when Tony has a day off work, we frequently drive the back roads of North Central Mississippi, looking for lost and abandoned cemeteries to document.

On one of these daytime excursions in early October 09, we stumbled upon the Asberry Cemetery located in Marshall County off a backroad, a few miles south of Holly Springs.

This cemetery was tucked up quietly in the woods and looked as if it had not been visited since the 1950's. The grass and weeds were tall and the area was overgrown, hiding many old 1800 gravemarkers. There was an eerie quiet in this place. A strange creepy feeling, as if you were being pushed to get out. I did not find this a pleasant experience in spite of the charm of the old stones.

However, despite the risks of snakes, chiggers, cockelburs and shadow people, I was determined to photograph all the stones. I managed to photograph 98 % of them in spite of the fact that I felt hurried, watched and breathed upon the entire time. LOL

We were also able to capture a somewhat creepy voice on our digital audio recorder, which left me feeling less than welcome.

Tony & I agree that this next clip sounds like two different voices, possibly a man and a woman. Neither of the voices are one of us.  Based on the clips we felt that whatever or whoever was there, was not happy about us being there.
